As human beings, we tend to be judgmental at the first sight. That is why a first impression is very important, because it can make or break something.
Europe and Asia are almost opposite in every aspect, could it be the weather or way of life. Coming from a poor country and less organized country, (not bashing my own country, but i believe it is a reality) Finland is an upgraded country.
What are the three things that i noticed during my first 2 days stay in Rovaniemi, Finland.
1. Finland in general is a safe country. Particularly in Rovaniemi, it is a safe place. The first thing that I noticed is some Finns, if not all, can leave the door of their car unlocked without the fear that some of their belongings might be stolen. Because of very low crime rate, maybe Finns tend to trust that no one will steal their belongings in the car, even if they leave it unlocked. As a foreigner who experienced to be robbed multiple time in my country of origin, I was amazed by low crime rate in Finland. It gives high level peace of mind in its citizen.
2. Finn people in Rovaniemi will greet you with their smile even if you do not know them and even it is your first time to see and meet them. Every time that i happened to make an eye to eye contact with them, they would initiate and greet me with a smile and would say “hei”. Some of them may even start a conversation. Most Finns know how to converse in English, but some of them are not fluent, so better know and learn their mother tongue.
3. Rovaniemi is a beautiful and organized city. All apartment are almost all the same. You can never know who are the rich and the poor because all the houses are the same. In my opinion, having the same apartments promotes equality. All apartments are in the urban area, that makes all the remaining land spaces a forest, field and lake.
This is just an observation for the first 2 days and just my personal experience.
Below are some of the pictures that I took in the city center.
